What to expect from Oneplus in 2018

Hello friends,

Hope you are doing well. The mobile world congress is about to begin. All the tech enthusiasts must be very excited for the upcoming weekend. In one of my last blog posts, I chose Xiaomi and Nokia as the winners. Many of my friends might disagree because Oneplus a.k.a Oppo's mid range flagship is one of the strong contenders. I have been a critic of Oneplus for past several months. That's because of several reasons. Lets check what Oneplus did wrong in past several months.

1. Marketing 2X optical Zoom for Oneplus 5 camera, then when confronted by the Developers, Oneplus accepted it was 1.6x.

2. Then the benchmark manipulation issue. "Seriously, Oneplus? You had 835 processor, yet you had to manipulate the AnTuTu score"

3. Getting privacy info via system app. This one was a blunder which Oneplus apologized later.

4. Numerous credit card hacks from their website. Though, mobile marketing need not to be blamed for that.

Leaving the above 4 points apart, the most 2 things which Oneplus did really hurt its fan base are

Firstly, launching Oneplus 5T within 5 months of launching Oneplus 5. I seriously thought the "T" thing was just one time marketing gimmick. But, Oneplus proved me wrong. It hurt many people as Oneplus 5T has this 18:9 amazing display at the same price of OnePlus 5. The OP5 users in fact never got any discount offers for exchanging mobiles. That was really sad. Needless to tell that, Oneplus 5T was launched with Nougat which is a clear disappointment for many.

Secondly, a price increase. Oneplus used to be very price efficient. At 20k, oneplus used to offer class of art design, great processor and good camera. But, in 2017, Oneplus went offline. That made them increase the price. Every season the price got increased. Let it be OP3, OP3T then OP5 and 5T.

So what to expect from Oneplus? Everyone knows, Oneplus' performance is top notch. Its probably the best fluid phone after Pixel devices. Oxygen OS is amazing. They have also largest share in flagship devices being sold online in India. The mobile is always a great value for money. But, we have to accept that the expectations of people, fans and critics like me have increased.

Firstly, Oneplus needs to acknowledge that their price is falling too nearer to last year's flagships. The flagships have great brand and resale value. For example, Oneplus 5T is selling at 32k, when LG G6 is selling at 29k. Samsung S7 edge is selling at 36k. Therefore, a lot of people will prefer Tier 1 brand. So, Oneplus needs to price their mobile aggressive and competitive.

Secondly, oneplus must stop launching 2 mobiles in a span of 6 months that too with last year's OS. This hurts Fan base. Rather, they can launch a budget device with killer spec. I will love to see Oneplus launching a device at 20k with snapdragon 660.

Thirdly, Oneplus has to understand their price range is now threatened by Honor and Xiaomi with launch of V10 and Mix 2. Even, Tier 1 brands like Nokia and LG have kept prices of Nokia 8 and V30 plus pretty aggressive. The value for money even gets more important to people.

Fourthly, Oneplus needs to work more on camera and giving water resistant to their mobiles or be innovative like putting a finger scanner under display. Every flagship normally gives OIS and at least splash proof IP54 rating to their mobiles. They also innovate. For example, 18:9 display by LG, Dual camera by Apple etc. Sadly, Oneplus does not innovate. Besides, the display is still Full HD when its competitors offer Quad HD display.

So, in a nutshell, what I want to tell that Oneplus in 2018, needs to produce a water resistant mobile having a Quad HD Amoled display with a better camera being equipped with features like OIS  and under screen finger scanner while keeping the price too aggressive, may be under 35000. Oneplus must not breach the level of 40k which is considered to be the arena of the flagship kings like Samsung, Apple and Google. Also, Oneplus must look into pricing Oneplus 3 or 3T under 22k and sell those or producing an upper budget mobile with 660 processor under 20k.
